A Quick History Lesson on Recording Web Sites • Thousands of years ago… ancient man recorded websites using a stone tablet and chisel • Centuries ago… educated man used a quill pen and notebook to record relevant sites • Ten years ago… people did the following: • List sites in notebooks or Word documents (hobbies, work, tutorials) • Bookmark sites in their web browser • Email interesting sites to colleagues and friends • Today… many people are using a social bookmarking tool like Delicious or Magnolia

  3. What is Delicious? • Here is a quick video that explains what Delicious is, and how it can benefit you. (alt site) • In summary, Delicious allows us to: • Organize web links using tags (keywords) • Save our bookmarked sites online (multiple PCs) • Save via multiple platforms (PC, Mac & Linux) • Save via multiple browsers (Firefox, IE, Chrome, Safari) • Share our sites with friends • Browse our friends’ tags for valuable sites • Save our friends’ sites in our account • Mark sites as public (shared) or private (not shared)

  4. How Does This Benefit You? • You don’t have to create the same bookmarks at home and at school • You don’t have to save so many old emails • Efficiently locate relevant & current sites • The idea of reciprocity- share and share alike!

The Three Tiers of Using Delicious • Tier 1: Beginners • Browse the Delicious accounts of others • Locate valuable sites and email them to yourself • Tier 2: Intermediate • Sign up for Delicious (record username & password!) • Browse the Delicious accounts of others • Save and tag sites listed by others • Tier 3: Advanced • Create a network send sites to others • Create bundles and subscribe to others’ tags via RSS

  6. Let’s Get Started! • Log on to your computer • Go to www.Delicious.com • Click on Join Now in the top right corner • Enter user details- skip the step that asks you to install Delicious bookmarks • Start searching and tagging!

  7. Reminders About Tags • Tags are sensitive- separate with a space! If you want to tag a restaurant in Manhattan, NYC (1 tag) is different than New York City (3 tags). • Think of a naming convention and stick with it (grades vs. grade vs. grading) • Public bookmarks- visible to all. Mark as private if it deals with something not school-related. • Search multiple tags by a user- get specific!

Other Reminders About Delicious • To see others’ sites, search their username or add it to the URL after www.delicious.com/ ________ • You can edit and delete your old tags! • See how popular the site is - # of tags by others • Change the title, description and tags for a site, if you found it on another person’s site • View the settings for more advanced features
