The cardiovascular system plays a vital role in sustaining life by ensuring efficient blood circulation throughout the body. The heart separates oxygen-poor blood from oxygen-rich blood, maintains unidirectional flow, and generates blood pressure to drive circulation. It also regulates blood supply based on the body's current needs. Blood vessels, in turn, transport blood and its essential contents, facilitate gas and nutrient exchange, regulate blood pressure, and direct blood flow to tissues that require it most. These functions work harmoniously to support overall health.

Cardiovascular System Heart Functions
Functions of the Heart • Keeps O2 poor blood separate from O2 rich blood. • Keeps the blood flowing in one direction – blood flows away from and then back to the heart in each circuit. • Creates blood pressure, which moves the blood through the circuits. • Regulates the blood supply based on the current needs of the body.
Functions of the Blood Vessels • Transport blood and its contents. • Carry out exchange of gases in the pulmonary capillaries and exchange of gases plus nutrients for waste at the systemic capillaries. • Regulate blood pressure. • Direct blood flow to those systemic tissues that most require it at the moment.
