  2. Narrator • The person telling the story • In Private Peaceful, the narrator of the story is Thomas Peaceful.

  3. Metaphor • A comparing two unlike things using the words is/was, are/were.

  4. Setting • The time and place in which the action of a story occurs

  5. Foreshadow • When an author provides hints or clues of events that will happen.

  6. Characterization • How a character is described in a piece of literature

  7. External Conflict • A struggle with an outside force that moves the plot along

  8. Internal Conflict • A character’s struggle with themselves that moves the plot forward

  9. Static Character • A character who does not undergo significant mental, emotional or personality change

  11. Flashback • When an author recounts something that happened before the beginning of the piece
