On the behalf of PBS/360 Public Relations, VeraQuest conducted a survey among Teachers to better understand the usage and attitudes toward using technology in their classrooms. • Questions focused on the following: • Frequency of using specific technologies in their classrooms • Impact from these technologies on enhancing education • Biggest barriers of technology use • Technology resources use to supplement/support teaching efforts • Reasons for using these technology resources • Value associated with technology resources • Support of technology in the classroom from parents, school board, and school administrators • Students usage of own technologies for classroom-related assignments • Channels/Companies use video content from for classroom instruction • Ratings of specific websites regarding usefulness toward lesson plans

  3. Summary Findings • Four-out-of-five teachers are users of technology in both their job and in their personal lives. The vast majority (91%) have access to personal computers/laptops in their classrooms, while another 83% have access to televisions/DVR.’s; however, only about six-in-ten (59%) have access to an interactive white board. When accessible, interactive white boards are used almost as frequently as PC’s/laptops. That’s because the vast majority of teachers (81%) believe the devices have the potential to enhance education. • Half or more of all teachers use the some type of technology to support the following teaching efforts: • Online lesson plans • Online images • Web-based game or activities • Articles tied to instructions • Sites that deliver class information to students and parents • There are several reasons teachers say they use technology, chief among them are: to increase student motivation (77%), to reinforce and expand the content being taught (76%), and to be able to respond to a variety of learning styles (76%).

  4. Summary Findings (cont’d) PC’s/laptops get used everyday/several times per week by 83% of teachers that have access. Similarly, interactive white boards get used everyday/several times per week by 77% of teachers that have access. Four-fifths of teachers (78%) would like access to more technology; however, cost appears to be a significant barrier. Although most teachers (70%) believe school administrators are supportive, only about half of teachers feel that way about parents or school-board members. The perceived lack of support by these stakeholder groups is not surprising given that they are usually the ones responsible for footing the bill. Despite the popularity of interactive white boards, if given the choice on how to use grant money, 34% would choose pads/tablets and 30% computers/laptops.

  5. Research Design Respondents were recruited from the uSamp panel (www.usamp.com). This panel has over 2 million members in the U.S. who have been recruited through a number of different panel enrollment campaigns. Panelists are required to double opt-in to ensure voluntary participation in the surveys they are invited to complete. Respondents receive points for the surveys they complete that can be accumulated and redeemed for a variety of products. Adult respondents were randomly selected from a targeted uSamp panel of pre-K thru grade 12 teachers to be generally proportional of the demographic strata of total U.S. Teachers. Once selected, respondents were sent an invitation to a protected web-based survey which ensured that only the intended recipient could complete the survey, and that the survey could only be completed once. There were 500 respondents from the U.S. who reported being teachers who completed the survey.

When asked to rate various classroom devices on their potential to enhance education, PC’s/laptops earned top marks: a score of 5 or 6 on a six-point scale by 85% of teachers; interactive white boards generated a score of either 5 or 6 by 81% of teachers. The resources that are used most often (everyday/several times per week) to supplement/support teaching are: websites to deliver/manage classroom information to parents and students (56%), online images (44%) and website games or activities (43%).   15. Increasing student motivation, reinforcing and expanding on content being taught and responding to a variety of learning styles are the top three reasons teachers use technology.   16. Using technology to deliver/manage class information is very/extremely valuable, as 62% of teachers give that resource a top two box rating. Obtaining online images, online video content, interactive games/activities each earn a top two box rating of 57%, with online lesson plans generating a score of 51%.   17. Almost four-fifths of teachers (78%) would like more access to technology. Most teachers (70%) deem school administrators to be supportive versus only about half who feel that parents or school-board members (those stakeholders who are financially responsible for technology) are supportive of the use of technology in the classroom.
