Islam is a religion that began 1450 years ago when the angel Gabriel (Jibreel) sent down the revelations from Allah (God) to the prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him). The term “Islam” means to fully submit to the One and Only God, Allah. The islamic religion has five pillars and the first pillar is the Shahada. Shahada means that anyone who becomes a Muslim must firmly believe that there is no God but Allah and that Mohammed is His chosen prophet and the last messenger sent by Allah. Muslim also believe in the previous prophets like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus but the main difference between Islam and other religions is that Mohammed was the final messenger and he revealed the Quran, which is the complete message from God. The other four pillars of Islam are performing salat (daily prayers), Paying Zakat (annual charity), Fasting in the month of Ramadan (from sunrise to sunset for a full month), and performing hajj pilgrimage (Once in a life time). These five pillars are practiced by millions of muslims around the world and they are obligatory on all muslims who truly believe in Allah. Main sources of learning Islam are the Quran and the teachings of the prophet (hadith books written by previous islamic scholars). Islam teaches that this life is a test and the only purpose of our creation sadaqah and zakat is to worship Allah and to do good on this earth through His Guidance. Whoever passes this test will be granted paradise and whoever does and spreads evil will have a spot waiting for them in the hell fire.
