  3. Job Outlook • Employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2012. In addition to openings resulting from growth, the need to replace accountants and auditors who retire or transfer to other occupations will produce numerous job openings in this large occupation. • Increased need for accountants and auditors will arise from changes in legislation related to taxes, financial reporting standards, business investments, mergers, and other financial matters. • Source: U.S. Department of Labor - Bureau of Labor Statistics General paragraph

  6. Strategic Areas of Focus More than 100 leaders in government financial management are finding solutions to major challenges facing the accountability profession. Human Capital Task Force For the third year, AGA brought together the top minds in the field at its annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition (PDC) to discuss progress and new ideas. “Forty percent of the federal work force is expected to retire over the next 10 years, and in more than half the states, one in five employees will retire over the next five years.” (U.S. Office of Personnel Management) General paragraph

Early Career Task Force • What can AGA do to make the organization more attractive to those individuals under the age of 35 that have just begun their career in government? • Consider forming a separate task force to find ways to engage those members who have just begun a government career, but over the age of 35. Projects Generated • Launched a new section to the National Office website titled, ‘Tomorrow’s Professionals’ (www.agacgfm.org/tomorrow). • AGA’s First Government Financial Management Case Challenge: October 15, 2007. • Strengthened ties to Beta Alpha Psi: an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals. • Partnering with colleges and universities to bring back government financial management courses: offer financial grants, create a course syllabus. • Survey to be sent out to all current early career members in March. Projects Generated • Promoting AGA involvement in other accounting organizations and clubs, public administration programs and more. • • Developing early-career mentoring opportunities. • Developing a database of accounting department chairs and career centers. • • Tracking AGA's high school and college scholarship recipients to encourage a connection. • Working closely with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to offer counsel and assistance. • AGA is now offering hotel scholarships for an early career member from each chapter to attend the Professional Development Conference. How Can I Assist AGA? • Participate with the Human Capital or Early Career Task Forces • Stay connected with your alma mater and connect them to your local chapter • Promote the benefits of professional development and membership to co-workers. • Consider earning the Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) certification. • Volunteer to become a chapter early career or regional early career coordinator • Ask your Chapter President about the PDC hotel scholarship • Offer feedback to the National Office General paragraph

  12. Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) This designation is conferred upon GFM professionals who have a bachelor’s degree, pass three examinations, and meet work experience requirements.
