  1. Handi Soap Orla Donnelly and Jennifer Lau

  2. INTRODUCTIONBackground Research • We have decided to take on the challenge of creating an irremovable soap. • The aim of the product is to increase awareness of the importance of hand sanitation in schools in Africa. • Lack of hand washing can lead to illnesses .Diarrhoeal infections can be prevented by the promotion of safe hygiene practices(Esrey et al. 1985). • Diarrhoeal disease is a major public health problem that was estimated to have caused 2.2 million child deaths around the globe in 2000 (Kosek et al. 2003). • Curticand Cairncross (2003) stated that hand-washing with soap in particular could substantially reduce the risk of diarrhoeal infection. • It has been reported that poor environmental conditions in the classroom can make both learning and teaching difficult. A considerable percentage of school absenteeism among children is associated with transmissible infection. http://www.sanitizerplus.ca/media/AlcoholFreeReducesAbsentee.pdf

  3. INTRODUCTIONContinued.. • Importance of hand washing • Soap wastage problem in Africa • Our challenge: to create an irremovable soap for school children in Africa • To create something fun and appealing to children that will encourage them to wash their hands • Previous ideas similar to ours (soap wall)

  4. Our Idea: • To create an irremovable soap. • A rubber watch(waterproof) with attachable soap charmsinserted in a plastic case

  5. Functional Requirements • The watch will have an alarm which will remind the children to wash their hands. • The alarm will be set by a teacher or each individual child • The alarm can be either set to beep or vibrate to prevent distraction in class. • Alarm system installed in schools

  6. Functional Requirements Continued.. • Watches will be distributed to schools in Africa • Teachers will distribute watches to school children • Soap is attached by either teacher or school child. • Alarm is set to remind school child to wash their hands. It is either set by teachers or the school child.

  7. Functional Requirements Continued.. • Alarm sounds or vibrates • Child is reminded to wash hands • Soap is removed from plastic case and used • Soap is put back into plastic case and the process can be started again

  8. Story Board The young child hears the beep/vibrate reminding them that it’s time to wash their hands. The kid then goes to the nearest water source knowing that the soap will be provided on their “Handi-Soap” and their hands will be cleaned properly, removing bacteria and germs. The child is now safe to enjoy their lunch without the risk of spreading germs and causing fatal illnesses.

  9. Non Functional Requirements • There will be a website for Handi-Soap which will provide people with information about the product. • This will be accessible to anyone as there will be no log in requirement to view the site. The aim of this website is to educate people of the importance of hand sanitation and how Handi-Soap can aid this. • The colours will be appealing to children and also easy to navigate • The website will be consistent with the product

  10. Similar Products • Silly bandz ($100 million dollar in annual sales in 2010) • Breo watch

  11. Overall Architectural Diagram

  12. Feasibility • Technical problems: watch component • Other Problems: • Soap can be lost • Soap can get sticky • Hook could break • However, these problems are easy to solve and would not cost a lot to fix • An extra amount of hooks and soap cases will be distributed to schools in case they break

  13. Conclusion/Summary • The hope is that our product can encourage school children to wash their hands. It is targeted at school children and aims to be fun. With the help of an alarm system set in schools and a reward system set by teachers, our product could be used effectively.
