Please call us or email us at Hays STEAM Academy if you ever have any questions or concerns. Our conference periods change daily. On each day, our conference time is during our scholars’ PE time.

  6. Depth & Complexity and Content Imperativesby Dr. Sandra Kaplan • When students think using these tools, they learn to approach subjects from the point of view of an expert. In doing so, they will understand concepts in deeper and more complex ways.

  7. Scholarly Behaviors The SIP Program focuses on these behaviors and our scholars strive to use these behaviors on a regular basis.. Thirsts for Knowledge Sees from Multiple Perspectives Brings the Right Tools Ponders the Big Idea Saves Important Info Exercises the Intellect Accesses Multiple Resources Listens Respectfully Sets Goals Asks Good Questions

  8. Why Scholarly Behaviors? • Dr. Sandra Kaplan developed a set of characteristics or behaviors most common in “scholars” while conducting research with gifted and talented students.   Teaching students to become aware of and practice scholarly behaviors will help them in school as in life. • Recognizing the actions, habits, and pursuits of scholars is advantageous to all students.

  9. Winning, Losing, Failure • “Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.” -Wilma Rudolph

  10. All I know is that I know nothing. -- Socrates

  11. “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” by Tim Notke

  12. About the GT ProgramScholars in Progress STAAR EXPECTATIONS • Students must meet expectations on STAAR annually. • Failure to abide by these expectations will result in a meeting to review your child’s status in the SIP program. • The meeting will involve a campus administrator, the classroom teacher, the SIP teacher, a parent(s) and a representative from the Advanced Academic Services Department.

  13. About the GT ProgramSCHOLARS IN PROGRESS GRADE Requirements • SIP students must maintain the A or AB Honor Roll each nine week period. • They are pulled 20% of their instructional time to attend SIP class, so their classroom grades need to stay at the A or AB level. • If the SIP student doesn’t earn the A or AB Honor Roll status, he/she will be placed on academic probation. A letter will be sent home. • If the student doesn’t improve his/her grades at the end of the next nine week period, he/she could be removed from the SIP program. **A meeting will be held to discuss what is best for the child.**

  18. CHESS Playing the game of Chess, on a regular basis during childhood improves: learning thinking analytical power decision-making and planning self-confidence memory skills concentration and academic performance of the child. • On a whole, playing the game of chess is essential for transforming a child into a responsible, disciplined, and wise human being. • From www.chess.com

  19. CHESS • We will play chess for about one hour each week during SIP class time. However, it is crucial that the students practice their chess skills at home. • We prefer for the students to play on an actual chess board, but playing electronically is ok as well. • Reasonably priced chess sets and chess materials may be purchased online. www.wholesalechess.com/ is an excellent site to buy chess items. • In the spring, the SIP program will have a city-wide chess tournament at UTPB for all GT students in grades 1-5. IT WILL BE ON APRIL 13th. • AND there is a regional chess tournament, hosted by the Midland Chess Club, in the spring time as well. • Many opportunities are available for our Scholars in Progress chess masters in progress!

  20. On your child’s SIP day you are invited to participate in our chess lesson and chess practice. • Chess logs: Thirsting for Knowledge. Three things are needed 1) date 2) win, lose, or tie 3) parent initials to verify • DOJO please join our class and check it regularly. • This is our main form of communication.
