  2. Nicaraguan Civil War • Was the result of the overthrow Anastasio Somoza Debayle, the dictator in charge of the Somoza party. • The overthrow happened on July 19, 1979.

  3. Nicaraguan Civil War • The overthrow was led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). • This group governed Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990. • The FSLN and other rebel groups were called Contras, meaning “counter-revolutionists”

  4. Boland Amendments • Three amendments put through Congress from 1982 to 1984. • Their goal was to limit U.S. interference and assistance in the Nicaraguan revolution on the side of the Contras.

  5. Boland Amendments • The amendment took form as a part of the Defense Appropriations Act of 1983. • Reagen signed the Act on Jan 21, 1982 • This act outlawed American assistance to the Contras to overthrow the government. • The reasoning was to avoid further conflict with the USSR.
