  2. Who was Monkey King? • Well loved hero in Chinese literature • Character from 16th century book, Journey to the West • Troublemaker with a good heart!

  3. Making of Monkey King In ancient China, on top of Flower Fruit Mountain, there was a rock … One day, after many, many years, it burst open … And out jumped a monkey!!

  4. It’s good to be the king! And the monkeys crowned him king… Monkey King found a beautiful paradise for the monkeys to live… But after 400 years, Monkey King got bored. He wanted adventure… so he left!

  5. Monkey King gets his powers • Monkey King traveled to Square Inch Mountain where he trained with Master Subodhi • He learned, among other things:the secret of immortality 72 transformations how to fly • Monkey King went home to Flower Fruit Mountain, just in time to defeat the Demon of Chaos and save his fellow monkeys! • Monkey King then decided he needed a royal weapon. He traveled to the Dragon King’s undersea palace and found Ruyi, a magic rod that gave him even greater power!

  6. Wreaking Havoc in Heaven! Monkey King caused a lot of trouble for the Jade Emperor in heaven. • He ate all of the sacred peaches and magical sweet buns and drank the emperor’s favorite potion! The emperor was very mad but he could not defeat Monkey King. So he called upon the great Buddha for help.

  7. Don’t mess with Buddha! • Buddha tricked Monkey King by telling him he would be free if he could jump out of Buddha’s hand. • Monkey thought it would be easy and jumped to the top of the sky where he found 5 pillars. • He signed his name on the pillars and left his mark. • When he came back down, Monkey King realized the pillars were actually Buddha’s fingers. • Buddha turned his fingers into 5 Finger Mountain and trapped Monkey King under the mountain for 500 years until someone would free him.

  8. Free at last • 500 years later, Tang Monk was traveling to the west to bring back sacred scriptures to China. It was a dangerous journey and he needed help. • Guanyin (觀音), the Goddess of Mercy, sent Tang Monk to 5 Finger Mountain where he freed Monkey King! • Monkey King became Tang Monk’s disciple and traveled with him on his Journey to the West.

  9. Journey to the West • Tang Monk picked up more disciples to accompany them on their journey, including: • a pig • a sand monster • the fastest horse in the world All of the disciples are making up for their earlier misdeeds by serving Tang Monk and protecting him on his journey. After traveling for 14 years and over 100,000 miles the friends accomplished their mission. It was a hard journey, but Buddha rewards them immortal life and happiness!
