  1. Winter SymposiumGreater Milwaukee SynodJanuary 22, 2009

  2. A Beer Story A dry Irish-style stout, Muddy Mo' is full-bodied with a wonderful aroma. The chocolate malt topped with Cluster hops combines remarkable creaminess, smooth drinkability and the hearty, robust flavor of a classic Irish stout. Often called the best stout this side of Dublin, the Muddy Mo' Stout pairs well with our Brownie Sundae.

  3. Something important is happening in the Greater Milwaukee Synod.

  4. The people of the Greater Milwaukee Synod are being asked to work together to answer this key question:What is God up to in this corner of God’s world…and how can we help?

  5. This is a BoLD move!

  6. We really ARE bold people.

  7. By Next Spring… • A sense of purpose from God with input from all those who attend the Winter Symposium, Congregational Leadership Retreat, and cluster meetings • A sense of missional direction from God with input from people across the synod • A clear articulation of purpose and direction by the synod council – and a commitment to doing something about it!

  8. By the end of this event… • Renewed relationships with God and each other. • An introduction to the framework that will shape this process and some ideas for you to take “home” with you. • A common missional lens to help guide your work as leaders in this church. • A sense that you are helping shape the purpose & direction of this synod.

  9. The Renewable Church:An Introduction

  10. When you were little, what did you want to grow up to be (and why)?!?

  11. We all start out with a dream.

  12. There is a kind of toxic waste that infects way too many of the organizations, movements and communities we care about.

  13. “Thank God, only four more years…”

  14. A lot of us are aware of the climate crisis in our environment. But the AWFUL truth is that we have been no harder on the planet than we have been on its people.

  15. Disposable PlanetDisposable People People-friendly Planet- friendly

  16. “We need to be accountable to God’s family. Once we start living in a way that is people-friendly to all of God’s family, we will also be environment-friendly.” – Desmond Tutu

  17. It’s time to clean up the toxic mess we’ve made of our life together.

  18. Consumable => Renewable Approach People are disposable => Life Sucking => Purposelessness => Scarcity-mindset => People feel used up => Self-centered => Consumptive => Unsustainable => Finite => People are valuable Life Giving Purposefulness Abundance-mindset People feel use-ful Other-centered [Re]Productive Sustainable Replenishable

  19. Becoming A Renewable Church “…we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinarypower belongs to God and does not come from us” – 2 Cor. 4:7 There is a replenishable source of energy – creativity, passion, hope, strength, vision, dedication – dwelling within us and within our organizations. We believe this power comes from God.

  20. Three Simple Steps • Be who you are • See what you have • Do what matters

  21. P.A.W.N. Analysis See what you have when your Purpose comes together with the Assets, Wows, and Needs that exist in your church and in your context!

  22. The church doesn’t “have” a mission.God has a mission…and God’s mission has a church.

  23. So, what IS God’s mission? Diving Into Acts

  24. Read and, as a team, write one sentence that completes the following: • Acts 1-2 • Acts 9 • Acts 10 • Acts 17 “I am on a mission to… ____________________________________________________________________________________. Love, God

  25. God’s mission comes TO us…and it comes THROUGH usto others. Acts 9:32-35

  26. Draw Your Answers!! • How has God’s blessing of love, forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, peace, or freedom come to you recently? • How has God been at work through you, like God was at work through Aeneas, making a difference in the world and/or in somebody else’s life?

  27. What is true for us individually is true for us together….as the church.Let’s BUILD one!

  28. As a group, use what’s on your tableto build the churchIN THE BOOK OF ACTS!!!

  29. Question What do you think would happen in the greater Milwaukee area if we actually DID what we are supposed to do?

  30. So, what DO you think God’s purpose is for us AS A SYNOD?!?

  31. God has important work for us to do.

  32. What’s Next? • Encourage the members of your congregation to attend this year’s Cluster Meetings & Congregational Leaders Event. • Involve everyone in your congregation in helping us gather data about our assets, “wows,” and needs. • Take this stuff home and use it!

  33. Just to be clear… • We are NOT going to figure out what “we” think the purpose and directions of our synod should be. • We’re going to listen, together, for God. • Which means the “end” of this process is only the beginning.
