  1. A Proposed Plan for the Establishment of New Attendance Zones for Great Bridge Middle School and Hickory Middle School January 10, 2011 School Board Meeting

  2. PURPOSE • Establish new attendance zones for GBMS & HMS that will align the middle school attendance zone with the high school attendance zone for the neighborhoods of Bridgefield, Great Bridge Gardens, and Stonegate

  3. RATIONALE • One option is presented in order to align the middle school attendance zones with the high school attendance zone in the neighborhoods of Bridgefield, Great Bridge Gardens, and Stonegate • The plan addresses the middle school zones for GBMS & HMS only • Elementary & high school zones are not impacted

  4. Background Information:General Information

  5. Background Information:Zone Adjustment Justification • Dec. 13th Board meeting, staff was directed to draft a zone adjustment between GBMS & HMS • Affected neighborhoods are Bridgefield, Great Bridge Gardens & Stonegate • Aligns middle and high school zones for these neighborhoods • GBMS can accommodate additional students without adding portable classrooms • Relief would be provided to HMS

  6. Background Information:Instructional Impact • Based on most current information available, no net increase in instructional staff is anticipated at GBMS and HMS due to the proposed zone adjustment • Any increase in staff at GBMS would be offset by a loss of staff at HMS • Gifted education program will be expanding to 7th Grade in 2011-12 and the impact of that program on both schools is uncertain at this time

  7. Description:Areas Rezoned to GBMSAreas Rezoned from HMS • The area east of the Chesapeake Expressway, along Mt. Pleasant Rd. to Cooper’s ditch including the neighborhoods of Bridgefield & Great Bridge Gardens • The area along Johnstown Rd., south of Draughon Rd., to and including the neighborhood of Stonegate Note: These neighborhoods would then be aligned with the hgih school attendance zone

  8. Enrollment & Ethnicity ENROLLMENT ETHNICITY

  9. Recommendation • Adopt the proposed school boundaries as the new attendance zones for GBMS & HMS (Map 2) • Specifically the neighborhoods of Bridgefield, Great Bridge Gardens & Stonegate would be rezoned from HMS to GBMS

  10. Grandfathering Alternatives • Alternative 1: No grandfathering • All students in Grades 6, 7 & 8 will attend GBMS in Sept. 2011 • Alternative 2: Grandfather the rising 8th Graders • All impacted students in Grades 6 & 7 will attend GBMS in Sept. 2011 • Rising 8th Graders have option of remaining at HMS for the 2011-12 school year • School bus transportation will be provided for the 2011-12 school year • Will require at least 1 additional school bus (cost of $89,000) and 1 bus driver (cost of approx. $22,000 - $24,000 for salary, fringe, and hospitalization)

  11. Implementation of New Zone Change • New middle school attendance zones will become effective for GBMS & HMS in Sept. 2011 • Letters will be mailed to all students who will attend GBMS (Winter 2011) • No changes are proposed for the elementary or high school levels
