  2. What are Time Penalties? • A penalty that results in a penalized team playing SHORT • Time penalties are the only penalties which are indicated on the penalty clock • Minor and/or Bench Minor penalties • Major and/or Match penalties

  3. Time Penalty Procedure Officials must consider two questions when a goal is scored: • Is the team scored against playing shorthanded? • Are they serving a Minor or Bench Minor time penalty? If answer no, then no time penalty is washed out If yes to both questions, wash out first Minor/Bench Minor time penalty being served

  4. See Pages 98-100 in your Officials Bulletin

  5. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – 2 4:30 A9 – 2 4:00 Goal 3:50 • First time penalty automatically terminates. A7’s time penalty has the least amount of time remaining

  6. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – 2 4:30 A9 – 2 (on delay) 3:50 Goal 3:50 • A7’s penalty is terminated as it has the least amount of time remaining • Penalty is assessed to A9

  7. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 –2 + 2 4:30 A9 – 2 4:30 Goal 3:50 • The first two minute time penalty shall automatically terminate (A7) • In situations where both time penalties have the same amount of time remaining, the penalties are to be washed out in the order in which they occur (or in which they are reported)

  8. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time B3 – 2 5:00 A7 – 2 4:30 A9 – 2 4:00 Goal 3:50 • A9’s time penalty caused Team A to be shorthanded • Since A7’s time penalty has the least amount of time remaining, it is considered the first time penalty

  9. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – 5+GM 6:30 A9 – 2 6:15 Goal 6:10 • A7’s five minute time penalty cannot be washed out on the goal • A9’s two minute time penalty is washed out

  10. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – 2 B3 – 2 4:00 A9 – 2 3:30 Goal 3:00 • A7 and B3 are coincidental and did not cause Team A to be shorthanded. Neither of these penalties can be washed out • A9’s penalty caused Team A to be shorthanded and is washed out when the goal is scored Coincidental

  11. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – 2 +2 4:00 A9 – 2 3:30 Goal 3:00 • Team A was shorthanded due to A7’s first two minute penalty and A9’s two minute penalty • A7’s first two minute penalty is terminated because it has least amount of time remaining

  12. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – +2 4:00 A9 – 2 3:30 Goal 1:50 • A7’s first minor expired at 2:00 • Team A was shorthanded due to A7’s second minor and A9’s two minute penalty • A9’s minor is terminated because it has the least amount of time remaining 2

  13. Time Penalties Team A Team B Time A7 – 2 6:00 B3 - 2 5:30 A9 – 2 5:00 Goal 4:30 • Team A was shorthanded when the goal was scored • The first “time” penalty to be washed out • A7’s penalty has the least amount of time remaining of all minors being served and is considered the first “time” penalty and is terminated • Teams being short but at even strength before A9 was penalized has no bearing on application of the rule

  14. What are Delayed Penalties? Rule 4.12 (a) • If a third (or subsequent) time penalty is assessed to a team serving two time penalties, the third (or subsequent) time penalty shall not commence until one of the previous two time penalties elapse Rule 4.12 (c) • Players assessed time penalties shall return to the ice in the order of expiry of their penalties
