  2. “Fifteen” by William Stafford Pg. 286 South of the bridge on Seventeenth I found back of the willows one summer day a motorcycle with engine running as it lay on its side, ticking over slowly in the high grass. I was fifteen. I admired all that pulsing gleam, the shiny flanks, the demure headlights fringed where it lay; I led it gently to the road, and stood with that companion, ready and friendly. I was fifteen. We could find the end of a road, meet the sky on out Seventeenth. I thought about hills, and patting the handle got back a confident opinion.  On the bridge we indulged a forward feeling, a tremble. I was fifteen. Thinking, back farther in the grass I found the owner, just coming to, where he had flipped over the rail. He had blood on his hand, was pale- I helped him walk to his machine. He ran his hand over it, called me good man, roared away. I stood there, fifteen.

  4. When I Heard the Learned Astronomer by Walt Whitman When I heard the learn'd astronomer, When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me, When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them, When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room, How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick, Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself, In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time, Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars. • Where do you see a shift or change in the structure of this poem? • Paraphrase: What is happening in the first part of the poem? What is happening in the second part of the poem? • What is the message of this poem?

  5. “15” by Steve Dawson Fifteen is walking down the beach with your friends discussing the beach house you’re going to move into the minute you turn eighteen. Fifteen is trying to convince your mom to let you take the car for a spin and when she says no, convincing her at least let you back it in and out of the garage. Fifteen is having enough hormones rocketing through you to kill the average man age fifty. Fifteen is summer. Fifteen is calling the girl who doesn’t know you exist to get the homework you already have just so that she speaks to you then hanging up before she answers. Fifteen is snowboarding, and surfing just for the sake of telling your friends that you do even if you don’t. Fifteen is saying, “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I make tonight,” but not believing it.
