Alternative Education – Options to traditional education Charter Schools Act of 1992 – Legislature outlined the purpose for charter schools • Improve student learning • Increase learning opportunities, especially for low achieving students • Encourage the use of different and innovative teaching methods • Encourage competition within the public school system Orange County • 12 charter schools were operating in 2005-2006 • Approximately 6,300 were enrolled California • 575 charter schools were operational in 2005-2006 • Approximately 200,000 were enrolled

Cole Academy - Site based Instruction • El Rancho Charter School - Site based Instruction • El Sol Santa Ana Science and Arts-Site based Instruction • Gates Charter Language School-Site based Instruction • Journey School - Site based Instruction • Olive Crest-Nova Academy - Site based Instruction • Opportunities for Learning - Independent Study • Orange County Educational Arts Academy -Site based Instruction • Orange County High School of the Arts - Site based Instruction • Santiago Middle School - Site based Instruction

Private Schools • More than 300 private schools in Orange County • Serving approximately 57,000 students • Tuition ranges from $2,000-$20,000 per year Continuation Schools • An educational option for students in California since 1919 • School district option for students in grades 9-12 only • High School diploma program designed for those students whose nees are not being met in a comprehensive high school.

Drug treatment programs Phoenix House Breakaway Hope Institute College Hospital Project Hope School Serving homless children in grades K-8 Schools and Services cont… Approximately 60 community school sites throughout Orange County providing an individualize learning program serving students grades 6-12. Selected sites provide a teen parenting program.

Schools and Services cont… CHEP Community Home Education Center • Home-school Program serving approximately 1.200 students in grades K-8. • 4 Regional sites throughout Orange County • Credentialed teacher partners with the parent in providing standards based instruction. Pacific Coast High Serving students in grades 9-12, home based instruction emphasizing online instruction utilizing a community college format.

Student Outcome for ACCESS • 1,044 High School diploma • 160 GED recipients • 2 California High School Proficiency Exam passed TOTAL: 1,206 Approximately 10% of student population returned to district during the school year. In our South County Region Area nearly 500 students returned to district in September 2006.

Non Public Schools • The role of nonpublic schools is serve as an alternative special education service available to districts, special education local plan areas (SELPAs), county office of education and parents. • The nonpublic school does not claim reimbursement for attendance • It is a fee/tuition based program
