What can we expect to read about in this short story?

Dialogue - a conversation involving two or more people or characters

  • Satire – humorous writing or speech intended to point out errors, falsehoods, foibles, or failings.

We can expect to laugh different aspects of middle-class ways of life, characters, setting, and dialogue.

  • Existentialism – philosophy that focuses on absurdity (silliness) and meaninglessness in life.

Rainy/Cold – Winters in N.E. part of France (said to affect their behavior)

South France – much warmer and sunnier

Unemployment rate is high

Those who DO have a job receive 5 weeks vacation/year AND only work 39 hrs/week

  • Due to social laws, everyone has health benefits, education, and unemployment PAY.
  • Languages: French, German dialect, Basque – near the border of Spain
  • Families eat together every day!
  • Lunch on Sundays is where it’s at!! Friends & Family gather. *Bread at every meal!

  • School is FREE, even at the university level.
  • Students commute to college.
