  2. Outline • significance of SMEs • skills development and CPD in SMEs • validation of competences acquired in the workplace • Leonardo project: ”Value of Work”

SME’s: definition and significance • Definition: • Employees: less than 250 • Turnover: less than 50 Mio € or • Balance sum: less than 43 Mio € • SME’s: • over 99% of the total number of enterprises in Europe • Over 90% micro-enterprises (less than 10 persons) • very important for vocational training and education (apprenticeship)

  4. Examples of skills requirements of the workplaces: • excellent professional competence • administrative skills • QA skills • networking skills • international skills • soft skills • CPD in focus!!!

  5. Focus on types of learning of employee • Skills development needs? • Individual level • Department/company level • Types of learning • Formal • Informal • Non-formal

  6. Validation of competences • Enables focussed and tailor-made skills development • Awareness-raising and empowerment of employees • Retention of employees • Cost-effectiveness • Raising overall job satisfaction

  7. LdV-project: Value of Work • EU focus on validation • Federation of Bank and Finance Employees • Co-ordinated by Iceland (ETSC) • Originally based on the need for validation of competencies for workers in banking • People with years of experience – but no certification

Project aims • The project focuses on a very important learning environment - the workplace in order: • To develop methods and tools for making the knowledge and skills, acquired at work, evident for validation purposes • To emphasize the transferability between sectors • To emphasize the role of stakeholders in the process of validation.

  9. Target group • People who have acquired competences through non-formal and/or informal learning and have little formal education • Social partners • Career counsellors

The partnership • Promoter: The Education and Training Service Centre, Iceland • Partners: • Cyprus (Synthesis Centre for Research and Education) • Great Britain (NIACE – National Institute of AdultContinuing Education) • Sweden (The Centre of Validation in the City of Malmö) • Denmark (The Danish Institute for Educational Training of Vocational Teachers ) • Slovenia (Slovenian Institute for Adult Education)

The project focus • Developing standards in banking - Handbook of standards • Developing methods and tools for validation – Handbook of methods and tools • Pilots:3 in banking, 2 in transfer sectors - Transferability of methods and tools in focus • Guidelines for stakeholders– brochure • Final conferencein Iceland september ’07 – dissemination of the project products and experience • Website:www.valueofwork.org

The Value • .....for the individual: “It changed my career plans, I became more self – confident” • “My competence became visible to me“ • “I enjoyed the process very much and will try to use my portfolio as the best I can, both in my work and for further education” • “It is the validation process that motivates you to maintain your knowledge through the appropriate methods” • …
