  2. What Does It Mean To Grieve? • To express deep sadness because of a loss. • What Is A Wake? • The deceased is viewed before the funeral. • What Is A Funeral? • The deceased person is buried or cremated. • What Is A Memorial Service? • A ceremony to remember the deceased.

  3. What Are The Effects Of Loss? • STRESS! • Resulting in: • Confusion • Headaches • High blood pressure • Irritable – lose your temper easily • Stress related illnesses (4.2) • Use breathing & tension relieving exercises to lower stress levels

  4. What Are The Five Stages Of The Grieving Process? • Denial: • Refuse to believe a loss has occurred. • Anger: • Blame yourself &/or others for the loss • Bargaining: • Final attempt to avoid the truth/loss. • Depression: • Great sadness that keeps you from participating in daily activities. • Acceptance: • Begin to cope with a loss. The loss is still painful, but you know that life goes on & you will get through it.

  5. How Can You Help Others Deal With A Loss? • Show your support & do simple things for them like: run errands or cook a meal for them. • Tell the person, “I am here for you.” • Listen to them & let them talk about their feelings. • Tell the person, “You are strong and you will be able to cope.”

How Can You Help Yourself Deal With A Loss? • Get plenty ofrest &take time torelax • Continuewith your normalwork/activities • Shareyourmemories & thoughts • If the death of someone was unintentionaldon’t blame yourself or others. • Blaming others only creates a way of avoiding the truth. • Join a support group

What Are Available Resources For Depression? • Support Groups:Listen to you & support you • Medication: prescribed by a doctor to help you with your depression. • Online groups: provide help anonymously • Community Organizations/Clinics: Free or low cost, dedicated to helping people w/depression & other mental illnesses.
