  1. Objectives • Evaluate Kennedy’s domestic policies. • Assess the impact of the Kennedy assassination.

Terms and People • New Frontier−a term for Kennedy’s proposals to resolve economic, educational, healthcare, and civil rights issues and to explore space • Equal Pay Act− passed in 1963, the law required equal wages for equal work in industries engaged in commerce or in producing goods for commerce • deficit spending− the government borrows money to spend more than it receives in taxes

  4. What were the goals of Kennedy’s New Frontier? President Kennedy was determined to improve life in the United States. He succeeded in making some domestic policy changes regarding poverty and racial discrimination and spurred interest in the space race.

  5. President Kennedy had a special style that made him seem different from other politicians. The new First Family charmed Americans with their youth and energy.

  6. Kennedy promised America a New Frontier. • He pledged to create economic opportunity and expand healthcare and civil rights. • He also wanted to jump-start the space program.

  7. Some of President Kennedy’s New Frontierproposals succeeded. Kennedy was able to: • Increase the minimum wage • Extend Social Security benefits • Improve the welfare system • Pass the first Equal Pay Act for men and women However, a conservative Congress prevented Kennedy from enacting all of the programs he proposed.

  8. Kennedy made several proposals related to the economy. • Increased military spending • Tax credits for business and tax cuts for the middle class • Deficit spending to stimulate the economy Kennedy’s economic initiatives led to tremendous economic growth in the late 1960s.

  9. Civil rights marches and demonstrations took place all across the country Kennedy introduced a civil rights bill in 1963. He also proposed to strengthen civil rights in response to the violence in the South.

  10. Kennedy recognized the need for the United States to beat the Soviet Union in the space race. He made it a national goal to place a man on the moon before 1970. Congress gave generous funding to NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

  11. In July, 1969 an American flag flew on the moon.

Their limousine speeds to Parkland Memorial Hospital. • 12:36 p.m. The President's limousine arrives at Parkland. • 12:40 p.m. Vice presidential aides arrive at Trade Mart, where a crowd is awaiting the president's arrival. • 12:40 p.m. Lee Harvey Oswald boards a bus.

  13. 12:44 p.m. Oswald gets off the bus. • 12:47 p.m. Oswald enters a cab. • 12:54 p.m. Oswald leaves the cab and walks to his boarding house. • 12:59 p.m. Oswald arrives at his boarding house. He leaves several minutes later with a pistol. • 1:15 p.m. Oswald is stopped by police officer J.D. Tippit. Tippit is shot to death. • 1:45 p.m. Oswald runs into the Texas Theater. • 1:50 p.m. Oswald is arrested inside the theater. • 2:08 p.m. A hearse bearing Kennedy's body leaves Parkland hospital. • 2:15 p.m. The hearse arrives at Love Field. • 11/24/63: • Morning Jack Ruby is at his apartment when a friend calls asking him to wire $25. • 11:17 a.m. Ruby arrives at Western Union to wire the money. • 11:21 a.m. Ruby shoots Oswald.

  14. After Kennedy’s death, Vice President Johnson was sworn in as the new President. The nation moved to resolve the economic and equality issues Kennedy had identified. Johnson also appointed the Warren Commissionto investigate the assassination of President Kennedy.

Lincoln Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846 & as President in 1860 He was directly concerned with Civil Rights Lincoln was shot in the head in front of his wife on a Friday Lincoln shot in the Ford Theatre The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was known by three names of 15 letters Booth shot Lincoln in a theater and fled to a warehouse (barn) Booth was killed before being brought to trial There were theories that Booth was part of a greater conspiracy Lincoln's successor was Andrew Johnson, born in 1808 Kennedy Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946 & as President in 1960 He was directly concerned with Civil Rights Kennedy was shot in the head in front of his wife on a Friday Kennedy shot in a Lincoln (Ford) The assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was known by three names of 15 letters Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and fled to a theater Oswald was killed before being brought to trial There were theories that Oswald was part of a greater conspiracy Kennedy's successor was Lyndon Johnson, born in 1908
