  1. Preliminary Survey Results 10th Nodes Committee Meeting - Copenhagen

  2. Context • The development of a Custom Portal or Nodes Portal Toolkit has been identified as a need by the Nodes since 2003 • Workshop held in Copenhagen in 2005 • Efforts at that time focused in developing http://data.gbif.org

  3. NPT Development: A participatory process Need is identified by the community • Exactly what is needed? • By whom? • How this would relate to existing developments? • Is this already included in the GBIF Work Programme? Preliminary assessment Capturing specific requirements Defining an implementation plan – community development? Alpha and beta testing processes Take up and roll over – full implementation

  4. Developing a Nodes Portal Toolkit – Preliminary Survey Results • Development of NPT key activity in the Work Programme 2009-2010 • Online survey designed to assess needs and priorities for NPT • 26 GBIF Participants responded: 21 countries, 5 international organisations – LOW RESPONSE

  5. What is the current interest from the Participant Nodes on the NPT?

  6. Priorities concerning NPT features

  7. Data types to be integrated in a NPT

  8. Availability of infrastructure at the Node level to host a biodiversity portal internally

  9. Nodes participation in a Requirements Capture and Analysis Phase? • Yes: 76% (19 Participants) • No: 24 % (6 Participants)

  10. Availability of developers from the Nodes to collaborate in the development of NPT

  11. Technical skills within the Nodes’ teams: Software technologies

  12. Technical skills within the Nodes’ teams: Various technologies

  13. Options for the basis for the development of the NPT

  14. General Recommendations • Present and discuss these preliminary results with the Nodes Committee at the GB16 Meeting in Copenhagen. • Use the Copenhagen meeting to get general feedback from those Participants who didn´t respond to the survey. The objective will be to get more accurate information about the number of Participant Nodes who need or are interested in a Nodes Portal Toolkit.

  15. General Recommendations • Convene an Advisory Nodes Committee group to help define the scope of the NPT (within the context of the GBIF Informatics Infrastructure and according to the Participants’ needs). This advisory group will work with the Secretariat staff in producing: • A scoping document for the NPT (focusing on the more general and strategic aspects), plus a first set of specific requirements for the NPT development • A set of recommendations on how to develop, implement and deploy such a portal toolkit.
