  1. PLANCK LFIN. MandolesiConsorzio PLANCK-LFI Incontro con Prof. P. Benvenuti IASF/CNR - Sez. di Bologna, Gennaio 2004

  2. ? WMAP

  3. The CMB environment, the error world and the TRUE MEASUREMENT The issue is to measure: the known knowns, the known unknowns, the unknown knowns and the unknown unknowns !

  4. PLANCK Systematics effects LFI goal: dT < 3 mK …At mK level there is much more than sidelobes and calibration! • Different • “tools” • required a • Effects due to combination of • (instrument beams) + (sky): • External straylight • Main beam reconstruction b Pointing uncertainties c • Effects generated within the satellite: • Instrument-specific non-idealities • Thermal effects from the satellite • Internal straylight

  5. 1.5 m off-axis telescope Focal Plane Unit (20K) Sun-Earth L2 Spinner, 1 rpm Launch: 2007, Ariane 5 V-grooves I/F (50, 100, 150K) Back-end Unit (300 K) Planck LFI HFI PSB InP cryogenic HEMT LNA @ 44GHz

  6. WMAP Before WMAP Planck WMAP

  7. The Planck case WMAP Models

  8. Polarisation

  9. The present data support the following inflationary models: ….and many others! HIC SUNT LEONES

  10. LFI pseudo-correlation radiometer design • Design to minimise 1/f noise impact • All channels are polarisation sensitive Sky = 2.7 K Ref. load Hybrid Hybrid f1 Sky LNAs Phase Switches f2 Reference load = 4 K 1 / 4096 sec Elegant Breadboard Sample Data Stream Prototype demonstrator

  11. 70 GHz Radiometers

  12. LFI organisation • Planck is a P.I. Mission • P.I. is N. Mandolesi IASF/CNR (Sez. Bologna) • LFI Consortium • 27 Co-Investigators (CoIs) World-Wide • Of which 7 are Italian • 92 Scientific Institutions World-Wide • Of which 25 are Italian Manpower IASF – BO: tot 22 (16 Res, 6 Tech)

  13. Planck LFI Management Structure

  14. Schedule • Planck will be launched in February 2007 • LFI is in Phase C/D with delivery of PFM to ESA planned for January 2005 • Planck PFM System tests period early 2005 to late 2006 • LFI Data Processing Centre (DPC) in Demonstration Model development phase • Operations Model phase starts March 2004 • Ground Segment System Testing period mid 2006 to late 2006

  15. LFI Funding 1/2 • Overall Industrial cost of LFI to Launch about 74 M€ • Italy 22.3 M€ Laben LFI prime contractor • USA 40 M$ (Sorption Cooler [shared with HFI] -JPL) • Finland 8.4 M€ (Millilab Front/Back ends of 70 GHz radiometers) • UK 3.1 M€ (Front end of 30-44 GHz radiometers -JBO) • Spain 3 M€ (Instrument data handling – IAC) • Spain 1.8 M€ (Back end 30- 44 GHz radiometers -Uni. di Cantabria • Norway 580 K€ (Part of EGSE) • ESA contribute 2.2M€ through component supply

  16. LFI Funding 2/2 • Other funding contributing to the DPC development: • USA (ERCSC) • Germany (level 4) • Italian funding from ASI secured up to launch only • Italian funding 1998 – 2006 (incl.) • Industry Laben 22.3 M€ • Italian Scientific Institutes 6.9 M€ for:- • Instrument development • DPC development • Planck LFI Science
