  1. Recording Audio Using Audacity & Converting to an .mp3 Format Rachel Brockman, Paine Primary Lead Technology Teacher

  2. Do I already have Audacity and LAME on my machine?

  3. Download Audacity and LAME • To Download Audacity and LAME, go to the TCS Private Website and click on Technology. http://private.trussvillecityschools.com/default.aspx

  4. Download Audacity • Scroll down to Audacity, and follow the directions in the wizard.

  5. Download LAME • LAME is the encoder that will allow you to convert your Audacity file to .mp3 format. • Select it from the list and follow the directions in the wizard. (LAME won’t create an icon or do anything noticeable at this point.)

  6. Point Audacity to LAME – Step 1 • Now point Audacity to where LAME is located on your machine. You will only need to do this once. • To do this open Audacity, click on Edit, and then select Preferences.

  7. Point Audacity to LAME – Step 2 • Select the tab labeled File Formats, and then click on Find Library.

  8. Point Audacity to LAME – Step 3 • Audacity will ask you if you would like to locate LAME. Select Yes, and then use the dropdown box to locate the file named “lame_enc.dll.” • To locate the file, first open the C: Drive, and then open the WINDOWS folder. Choose the system32 folder, highlight the “lame_enc.dll” file, and click Open. Now you are ready to record!

  9. Recording Using Audacity • It is very easy to record using Audacity. Open Audacity, and make sure that you have a functioning microphone. (You can just use the one built into your laptop.) • When you are ready to record, press the button with the red circle on it. You will see an audio track appear. Now record your melodious voice!

  10. Finishing Your Recording • When you have finished your audio recording, press the button with the yellow square to stop. • You can now edit your recording by deleting mistakes or dead air. Do this by highlighting the audio you wish to delete, and then click on the pair of scissors.

  11. Converting to an .mp3 File • Now you are ready to convert your audio file to an .mp3 format. Select File, and then Export as MP3. (You can also export your file as a .wav file by selecting Export as .WAV. )

  12. Saving your file • Select the location that you would like to save your new .mp3 file, and click Save. • A small window will pop up asking for information about the file. Fill out any field you wish and click OK.

  13. You Did It! • You have recorded and saved your first .mp3 file! Now you can imbed it in your SharePoint site, play it on your iPod, or begin a student podcasting project! • OR you can use it as a linked file in a PowerPoint! 
