  3. Clean Water Drinking Act • 1974 • Requires EPA sets water quality standards, tests and enforces standards • Amendments • 1986 - includes more pollutants and chemical to the water quality list • 1996 - requires public reports to be distributed • Current proposal - regulations of “fracking”

  4. Water Quality Indicators MWRA routinely uses six general indicators of water quality: • Microbial (bacteria and algae) • Turbidity • Corrosiveness (pH and alkalinity) • Disinfectant • Chemical (inorganic minerals/metals and organic) • Radionuclides

  5. Basic Water Quality Tests • Temperature • Tubidity • pH • Nitrates • Phosphates • Fecal Coliform • Dissolved oxygen
