  2. When are the tests? The English Language Arts Test is on: April 2 & 3 (Tue & Wed) The Mathematics Test is on: May 1 & 2 (Wed & Thu)

  3. Structure of the Math Test What to expect each day:

  4. What mathematics is tested? Five domains of mathematics are testedin grades 3, 4, and 5: • Number and Operations in Base Ten • Number and Operations—Fractions • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Measurement and Data • Geometry However, different domains are emphasized in each grade.

  6. Features of the Common Core test • More questions are grounded in real-world contexts rather than bare computation, emphasizing practical application of skills. Understanding the mathematical structure is integral to the task. • More questions require multiple steps. Children must plan a solution path and choose which operations to use. • More questions focus on the major properties of mathematics, such as the commutative property of addition, or the associative and distributive properties of multiplication.

  7. How do we prepare children for the test? • Our daily curriculum from K-5 incorporates mathematical practices such as making sense of context problems, articulating and critiquing math thinking, and modeling mathematics with equations, diagrams, and charts. • Like the test, our curriculum aligns with Common Core standards. Skills are accumulative: each year’s work builds on concepts from prior years. Teachers pace units to study math content in time for the test. • Children practice sample questions in all domains and analyze answers together.

Short Constructed Response Question in which students are asked to respond to a prompt or question by stating their answer and providing text evidence to support their answer. • Requires students to succinctly show their understanding, using details found directly in the text (3 sentences). • Students are expected to write in complete sentences and write with grade-appropriate language conventions. • Responses are scored holistically on a 2 point scale

Extended Responses Students respond to a multi-part question using text evidence to support their ideas. • Prompts ask one or two central questions, about one or two texts • Students are expected to use text evidence to defend an idea or position • Responses are scored holistically on a 4 point scale Historically, students in grades 4 and 5 have been asked to write in response to two related texts.
