  1. Preparation of a Strategic Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) Project - Phase I(November 2010- January 2013) Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Grant No. TF097459 through ADB and World Bank

  2. Discussion Questions Have you been involved in any vulnerability or adaptation assessment in Cambodia? What target sectors are most effected by climate change? What have communities/households done to cope with impacts of floods, droughts, and sea level rise? What kind of assistance can be given to rural and urban households to improve their ability to cope with climatic hazards? www.CamMoE-CCD-PPCR.org.kh www.pilot-program.blogspot.com

  3. Have you been involved in any vulnerability or adaptation assessment in Cambodia? IUCN Study – Building Coastal Resilience in Southeast Asia, focused on Koh Kong and Kampotprovinces. Climate risks and vulnerability were assessed using perception surveys using qualitative ranking. MRC/CNMC is conducting an adaptation assessment in Prey Veng (impacts of climate change on rice yields) Many organizations are working on various projects and initiatives relating to community resilience in PeamKrasop Wildlife Sanctuary (IUCN) CARE also implementing a climate change-related project in Koh Kong Cambodian Agricultural Research Institute (CARDI) – working on climate-resilient crop varieties and diversification www.CamMoE-CCD-PPCR.org.kh www.pilot-program.blogspot.com

  4. What target sectors are most effected by climate change? What have communities/households done to cope with impacts of floods, droughts, and sea level rise? Agriculture is one of the most vulnerable sectors to climate change CARDI assists communities all over Cambodia in introducing climate resilient (drought, flood, salinity resilient) crop varieties and diversification Disaster Management Committees have been set up at commune, district, provincial and national levels. DMCs mobilize and provide resources to support disaster-affected communities During the flood season, many communities move to higher grounds or the Tonle Sap lake and change the variety of crop species (e.g. flood-adapted floating rice). During the dry season, communities adapt by changing crop varieties, building drinking water storage facilities, acquiring water pumping equipment, and tree planting www.CamMoE-CCD-PPCR.org.kh www.pilot-program.blogspot.com

  5. What kind of assistance can be given to rural and urban households to improve their ability to cope with climatic hazards? • Introduction and distribution of climate resilient crop varieties to vulnerable provinces. • MAFF provides information to communities to become more prepared to floods. Requires capacity to utilize climate/weather information for better planning • NGO projects provide technical support and coordination, but there are no investments to apply this capacity. A mechanism is required for the government to provide more funding to NGOs. • The RGC (Ministry of Interior) is exploring decentralization and Commune Investment Plans. However, allocation of funding for infrastructure and capacity building is limited. • Understand risks/vulnerability of livestock (to pests and diseases) in the context of rising temperatures and changing rainfall regimes. www.CamMoE-CCD-PPCR.org.kh www.pilot-program.blogspot.com
