  1. How to Show or Hide File Name Extensions on Mac Do you know what is a file extension and why it is so important? Well, a file extension is shown at the end of a file and begins with a period followed by a few characters. For example, the myhomework.pdf file ends in.pdf, a file extension that may be associated with the Adobe Reader document on your Mac. However, the default setting for Mac OS is not to show the extension of a file, since those file extensions are hidden. As an instance, image files with the extension.png will ignore the file.png at the end of the file name, and applications will also discard the extension.app. WHY SHOW FILE NAME EXTENSIONS ON MAC?

  2. If you have not configured your Mac to show file extensions, it can damage your Mac. If not configured you should not open an unknown file on your Mac without checking its extension. For example, suppose you find a new file called “document001” on your Mac. It’s not a good idea to click on such an unknown file without taking a look at its extension, especially if you don’t remember creating a file with that name. It can be a harmful file or it can be a virus. Therefore, it is important that you enable the option to display file name extensions on your Mac. SHOW/HIDE FILE NAME EXTENSION ON MAC (INDIVIDUAL FILES):  First, select the individual file whose extension you want to show or hide.  Now, right-click on the unknown file and then select the option “Getinfo” in the context menu that appears.  In the pop-up window, click “Name and Extension” to expand the section.

  3.  And Finally, check/uncheck the box next to show/hide file name extension. SHOW/HIDE FILENAME EXTENSIONS FOR ALL FILES ON MAC:  Open the Finder icon in the taskbar of your Mac.  Now, click on the Finder option in the top menu bar of your Mac and then on Preferences in the drop-down menu.

  4.  Finally, click on the Advanced tab and then check/uncheck the Show all filename extensions box to hide/show the file extension.
