Sony Blu-Ray • “Blu-ray aims to deliver a theater-like experience of crystal-clear video and surround-sound audio on a home TV” • First debuted in 2002 at Japanese Expo • 6 Million Purchasers • Compatible with PS3 • Has 70% support of movie studios • Sold twice as many discs as HD DVD • Holds more data than HD DVD
Support from only two movie studios; Universal and Paramount Xbox 360 requires an add on accessory; $180. Was a first mover but Sony capitalized on weaknesses. Toshiba HD DVD
The Results • Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Netflix stopped carrying HD DVDs because of poor sales. • Universal Studies now will produce Blu-Ray DVDs, Dreamworks and Paramount will likely follow. • Toshiba joining Blu-Ray? No
