  10. DAVID the KING • David was Tempted • David Sinned • Consequences

  11. David was Tempted • Stayed home when army went to battle • 2Samuel 11:1

  12. 2Samuel 11:1 1 It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

  13. David was Tempted • Stayed home when army went to battle • 2Samuel 11:1 • Eyes dwelt on forbidden territory • 2Samuel 11:2-3

  14. 2Samuel 11:2-3 2 Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, "Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"

  15. David was Tempted • Stayed home when army went to battle • 2Samuel 11:1 • Eyes dwelt on forbidden territory • 2Samuel 11:2-3 • Did not refuse the King • 2Samuel 11:4a

  16. 2Samuel 11:4a 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, …

  17. David Sinned • Committed adultery. But got caught. • 2Samuel 11:4b-5

  18. 2Samuel 11:4b-5 4 … and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, "I am with child."

  19. David Sinned • Committed adultery. But got caught. • 2Samuel 11:4b-5 • Attempted deception to cover up his sin. • 2Samuel 11:8, 10-11, 13

  20. 2Samuel 11:8, 10 8 And David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash your feet." So Uriah departed from the king's house, and a gift of food from the king followed him. 10 So when they told David, saying, "Uriah did not go down to his house," David said to Uriah, "Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?"

  21. 2Samuel 11:11, 13 11 And Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing." 13 Now when David called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And at evening he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

  22. David Sinned • Committed adultery. But got caught. • 2Samuel 11:4b-5 • Attempted deception to cover up his sin. • 2Samuel 11:8, 10-11, 13 • Murdered Uriah, his faithful warrior. • 2Samuel 11:14-15

  23. 2Samuel 11:14-15 14 In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck down and die."

  24. Consequences • Because David did this evil. • 2Samuel 12:10-14

  25. 2Samuel 12:10 10 'Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'

  26. 2Samuel 12:11-12 11 "Thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 'For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun.' "

  27. 2Samuel 12:14 14 "However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die."

  28. Consequences • Because David did this evil. • 2Samuel 12:10-14 • David’s daughter raped — by his own son. • 2Samuel 13:10-14

  29. 2Samuel 13:10-11 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, "Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand." And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them to Amnon her brother in the bedroom. 11 Now when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, "Come, lie with me, my sister."

  30. 2Samuel 13:12-14 12 And she answered him, "No, my brother, do not force me, for no such thing should be done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing! 13 "And I, where could I take my shame? And as for you, you would be like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you." 14 However, he would not heed her voice; and being stronger than she, he forced her and lay with her.

  31. Consequences • Because David did this evil. • 2Samuel 12:10-14 • David’s daughter raped — by his own son. • 2Samuel 13:10-14 • David’s son murdered — by a half-brother. • 2Samuel 13:28-29

  32. 2Samuel 13:28-29 28 Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, "Watch now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, 'Strike Amnon!' then kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and valiant." 29 So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and … fled.

  33. Consequences • Because David did this evil. • 2Samuel 12:10-14 • David’s daughter raped — by his son. • 2Samuel 13:10-14 • David’s son murdered — by half-brother. • 2Samuel 13:28-29 • David’s son rebelled against him. • 2Samuel 16:21-22; 18:32-33

  34. 2Samuel 16:21-22 21 And Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go in to your father's concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong." 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and Absalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

  35. 2Samuel 18:32-33 32 And the king said to the Cushite, "Is the young man Absalom safe?" So the Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise against you to do harm, be like that young man!" 33 Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus: "O my son Absalom-- my son, my son Absalom-- if only I had died in your place! O Absalom my son, my son!"
