  3. What is Social Technology? • All technology used by major social institutions, such as education and health care • Technology that assists people with social interactions • Technology that seeks to solve social problems

  4. Facebook Facebook is an online directory that connects people through social networks at colleges and high schools. Users can post photographs and personal information to share with people inside their social network.

  5. MySpace • MySpace is a website that is open to anybody willing to sign up for an account. Users can post photographs, information, and even audio files and videos.

  6. Afya • Afya is a participatory action research project designed to engage African American women in assessing and increasing their access to quality health information and services through discussion boards and interactive video

  7. Ryze • Ryze is a business-networking website that allows users to connect with other professionals in various field in order to build a career, find a job, grow a business, or make sales.

  8. Social Technology in the Classroom • Create discussion groups that allow students to communicate with peers from diverse cultures. • Use the internet to contact government officials and business leaders to advocate for student-related social change

  9. Potential Problems • When using social technology unsupervised, students can divulge personal information to predators • Due to the digital divide, some students in the classroom have more access to technology than other students • Students can use social technology for non-educational purposes
