Who are NEA members?
  • They are 3.2 million school employees
  • They are teachers, bus drivers, clerical staff, food service workers, paraeducators, skilled trades, IT, custodians, school health staff, higher education faculty, retirees, and students
  • They work in 50 states and overseas
  • They are in the majority of the nation’s school districts

  • They are under a lot of stress
  • When we talk to them they all seem to be affected by arthritis or know someone who is
  • In informal discussions they seem fatalistic about their health

  • NEA members are agood target audience for the Arthritis Self-Management Kit
  • They don’t know about it
  • They don’t know how to get it
  • If we make it available they will take it (this is a variation on “build it and they will come.”

  • 50 free
  • 200 at a discount

  • We ran an ad, then had no kits

  • Targeted and personal outreach leads to kit requests
  • Recipients are responding to survey-sort of
    • First survey went to 35 people and 20 responded (83%)
    • Second survey went to 18 people and 6 responded (30%)
