  2. Welcome Back! • If you are one of the first few people, please hand out the workbooks • Grab today’s worksheet from the blue handout bin • Sit down and show me you are ready to “let it SHINE”

  4. Question • How does blowing air affect air pressure?

  5. Hypothesis • What is a hypothesis? • I think that if we blow air towards the can then the candle will ____________(stay lit or go out) because________________________.

  6. Materials • Tin can, drinking straw, jar lid, candle, plasticine

  7. Procedure: • Use the plasticine as a candle holder inside the jar lid • Place the can about 10 cm away from the candle holder • Light the candle • Predict what will happen if you point the straw at the front of the can and blow • Blow through the straw • Observe and record results

  9. Results • The candle did not stay lit

  10. Inferences • Air is fluid, so it travels around the can to blow out the candle • A fluid: is a substance that flows and takes on the shape of its container • When air moves faster it has less air pressure • The regular air pressure of the room forces the fast moving air around the can

  11. Taking the Plunge

  12. Challenge • With your thumb over the nozzle, push the plunger of syringe all the way in

  13. Materials • Plastic syringe • Your thumb

  14. Procedure • Pull the plunger back • Place your thumb over the nozzle • Try to push the plunger all the way in • Observe and record results

  18. Quiz and Toss • Teacher will ask a question • If you know the answer raise your hand • If you catch the ball answer the question • When the teacher asks the next question pass the ball to someone with their hand raised
