Supporting Paragraphs

Step 2 in writing your essay.

what is a supporting paragraph
What is a supporting paragraph?
  • In our last lesson, we learned how to create an introduction paragraph that prepared the reader for what to expect in your essay.
  • The second paragraph is a supporting paragraph.
    • This paragraph takes a reason that you gave in your introduction paragraph, and explains the reason to the reader.
example
EXAMPLE
  • Here is the lead that I had worked on yesterday.
    • Are you tired of your feet hurting you everyday? Sneakers are great because they are comfortable, they lace up, and they have holes in them to allow more air to get to your feet. Everyone should be wearing sneakers every day.
  • As you can see in this introduction paragraph, the first reason that I wanted to wear sneakers more often is because they are comfortable.
    • Now I am going to brainstorm some ways that sneakers are comfortable.
putting it all together
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
  • To start our supporting paragraph, we begin with a topic sentence. Again, we try to make it as interesting as possible so that we grab the reader’s attention.
  • Topic Sentence: Sneakers are much better than any other type of shoe because they are more comfortable.

NEXT…
  • Now, I add an example of how my statement is true. We can do this using words such as for example, because, therefore, and since.
  • Example: Sneakers are great because they have extra cushioning on the bottom of the shoe which helps protect my feet when I walk or run.
slide6
THEN…
  • Then, we add in an example of how we are affected by the topic.
  • Example: My shoes have no cushioning. Since I am a teacher, I have to be on my feet all day so that I can speak with my students. Every night when I get home, my feet hurt because my shoes are uncomfortable after a long day.
finally
FINALLY…
  • We end the paragraph by saying that if we get what we want, it will help us.
  • Example: If I were able to wear sneakers all day, my feet would feel much better, and I would be able to walk around my classroom even more than I do now!
