Goal of the meeting • First meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board • Obtain feedback from the Scientific Advisory Board on the relevance, quality, and impact of the current research • Obtain feedback and suggestions on plans for the research themes, applications, collaborations, etc. • A short written report would be useful • In the future, meetings every 12-18 months

Basic Research Unit: Mode of Operation • Cooperation of the two universities • Strong ties to the departments of computer science • Basic research in areas where applications are also visible • Cooperation with other sciences and with industry • International cooperation • Participation in teaching (everybody teaches)

  14. Goals for BRU for 2005-2006 • About 5-6 large themes • Approximately 50-60 researchers • Strong network of collaboration in Finland and internationally

Advanced Research Unit • Mainly located in High Tech Center, Ruoholahti • About 70 persons (50+20) • Main themes: • Mobile Computing and Communication • Adaptive Computing Systems • Intelligent Systems • Digital Economy • ”Media Convergence” • Semantic Internet, Community Media • Funding: National Technology Agency (59%), companies (22%), Academy of Finland (10%), universities (10%)

Advanced Research Unit: Mode of Operation • Focusing on a few related, industrially relevant, strategic, long-term research areas • Core projects with long-term vision (5+ years) • Medium term (3-5 years) projects focusing on new products, services, and technologies • Networking with complementary research groups at HUT, UH, other universities • Strong liaison with ICT and media companies • Multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research founded on computer science competence • International cooperation
