  8. How you can help your child at home • Reading • You should hear your child read at least 3 times a week. Ensure that you ask your child questions about what they have read for example: • What does the author/ illustrator do? • Who are the characters in the book, what are they like? • What was your favourite part of the story? • Children need to understand what they have read, as well as being able to read the words in the book. Encourage your child to sound out any unfamiliar words aloud. • Maths • This term we will be focusing on the 4 number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Please practise the following skills with your child: • Counting forwards and backwards from any given number. • Writing numbers. • Number bonds to 10 and then 20 ( 1 + 9 =10, 7 +3=10) • Recognising the 4 symbols. • Adding 2, 1 digit numbers together then 2, 2 digit numbers. • Subtracting 2 small numbers away from each other to find the difference. Then use larger numbers. • Literacy • During this term, the children will be reading a variety of fiction and non fiction books. • Please practise the following with your child: • Forming all letters correctly on a line. • Name all letters using their letter name (A, B, C) • Writing a simple sentence using a capital letter and full stop.
