  4. Layers of the Web

  5. Diagram of the Invisible Web

  6. Let’s Find Out More AboutThe Subscription Databases That Make Up So Much Of The Invisible Web

  7. Subscription Databases • Use to be on software you purchased • Now they are a service that you purchase online

  8. Online Databases • Are very current • They are updated daily • Many contain daily newspapers • And other periodicals • And even whole books.

  9. Information Found in the Databases • Are More Reliable (You can trust them time after time) • Have Better Validity (They’re based on sound evidence) • Are Closer in Quality to Book Sources • Reviewed by Editors • Experts in the Field Treated more like book source by teachers in higher education.

  10. Databases differ from a general Internet search in that the information from a database has undergone a review process to insure its credibility. Rather articles are selected by editors just like chapters in a book are selected by editors. Not just anyone can add an article to a database—like they do online!

  11. Another Way Databases Differ From Search Engines Often way too much excess information pulled up by search engines!

  12. Databases Have Built In Ways For You To Find Specific Materials • Can search for different media times—books, maps, magazines, newspapers, pictures, audio/video clips, transcripts, & encyclopedias (for example) • Can easily browse different subject areas

  13. Junior Edition Tutorial Subject Search Click on View to access articles. We chose “Atlantic Ocean.”

  14. Topic Search

  15. Yet Another Way Databases Differ From Search Engines • It’s easy to cite your sources • Many even do it for you! http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/libweb/elib/do/search

  16. Most provide you with options to email articles, etc. to yourself

  17. A Safe, Controlled Environment • No porn • No advertisements • No one asking for personal information, etc.

  18. Now You Tell Me . . . Why are Subscription Databases superior to the Internet search engines ? ? ?
