  1. IPv6 GlueWhy registrars need to support it Elise Gerich VP, IANA

  2. State the problem IPv4 will be fully allocated very soon

  3. Things change next quarter Over 320m IPv4 addresses have been allocated so far in 2010. There are only 115m addresses remaining. They will have been allocated by mid-2011

  4. State of the IPv4 Pool About 4% of total IPv4 space is left in the pool. That is approximately 180m addresses. Photo by Silverstealth

  5. Why should I care? IPv4 only has enough addresses for half the world’s population of 7 billion For the Internet to continue to grow it will need IPv6 If registrars don’t support IPv6 glue, their customers won’t be reachable by the entrants

  6. What is DNS glue? Important for networks that run their own DNS

  7. What is glue? Why is it needed? DNS glue is a normal part of DNS. All registrars currently support IPv4 glue registration Adding IPv6 glue support is a simple change to your web interface and registration database

  8. What is glue? Why is it needed? I can ask the TLD’s nameservers where the web site I want to visit is

  9. What is glue? Why is it needed? Without glue it tells me to ask ns.example.org but I don’t know where that is and so…

  10. What is glue? Why is it needed? …I have to ask where ns.example.org is and we are in a recursive loop as there is no glue.

  11. What is glue? Why is it needed? But when glue is registered and provided in the answer I can go and ask ns.example.org about www.example.org and…

  12. What is glue? Why is it needed? …my Internet experience works how it should. I get the DNS answer I need and can visit the web site I want.

  13. Let’s recap I need to get this sorted by the start of Q2 2011 because…

  14. IPv6 glue or customers will go! • The last five IPv4 blocks will be allocated by mid-2011 • Internet growth will need IPv6 • Domain registrants will to sell to people using IPv6 • So they will demand IPv6 glue • They’ll transfer if you don’t offer it Photo by Revisorweb
