  1. Medical terminology Part 4 The respiratory system

  2. Constructed medical terms: Many medical terms are ‘constructed’ from a combination of word parts… prefixes, Greek or Roman root words, and suffixes. Determine the meaning of the whole word by first deciphering the meaning of the suffix, then the prefix, and finally the root word. Then combine the 3 parts. MICRO / SCOP / IC Prefix meaning ‘small’ / root word meaning ‘viewing instrument’ / suffix meaning ‘pertaining to’ When you start with a root word and add a suffix that starts with a consonant OR another root word, then you have to connect the two word parts with a vowel. This is called a ‘combining vowel’, and is usually an ‘o, i, or e’. HEM / O / PHILIA Root word meaning ‘blood’ / combining vowel / suffix meaning ‘love of’

  3. Nonconstructed medical terms: If a medical term is not constructed from a combination of word parts, then it is called ‘nonconstructed’. These are words derived from other languages, words derived from names of people, from initials that form acronyms, or from abbreviations. To learn the meanings of nonconstructed terms, you must simply commit them to memory. The term ‘pasteurize’ refers to the process of heating milk to a temperature that kills harmful microorganisms. The term is derived from the name of its inventor… Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).

  4. Medical root words of the respiratory system…

  5. Medical prefixes for the respiratory system…

  6. Medical suffixes for the endocrine system…

  7. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Apnea (AP nee ah) The inability to breathe or exhale. Enlarged tonsils may create an obstruction

  8. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Dyspnea (DISP nee ah) Difficult breathing, usually caused by a respiratory disease or cardiac disorder. A normal breathing rhythm is called eupnea (yoop NEE ah).

  9. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Epistaxis (ep ih STAK siss) Nosebleed. This could be a sign of high blood pressure, a sinus infection, inhalation of an irritant, or blow to the face. It is also called rhinorrhagia (rye noh RAH jee ah).

  10. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Hemoptysis (hee MOP tih siss) Coughing up and spitting out blood.

  11. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Hemothorax (hee moh THOH raks) When blood pools within the pleural cavity surrounding the lungs.

  12. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Hyperapnea (high per AP nee ah) Abnormal deep breathing, such as found in emphysema patients, OR abnormally rapid breathing commonly called hyperventilation, as found in heart failure or anxiety attacks. The opposite, or shallow breathing, is called hypoapnea.

  13. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Hypoxemia (high PAHK see mee ah) Abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood. When abnormally low levels of oxygen are found throughout the body, the term may be changed to hypoxia.

  14. Medical terms, signs, & symptoms of the respiratory system… Sputum (SPYOO tum) The expectorant that is coughed up from the lungs. It may contain mucus, inhaled particles, pus, or blood.

  15. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Asphyxia (ass FIK see ah) The absence of respiratory ventilation… suffocation.

  16. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Asthma (AZ mah) This is usually regarded as an inflammatory response to an allergic substance by the lungs, characterized by narrowing of the bronchioles and formation of mucous plugs. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing.

  17. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Bronchitis (brong KYE tiss) Inflammation of the bronchi, often associated with a respiratory tract infection. Symptoms may include coughing, chest pain, and sputum. Chronic bronchitis may be the result of smoking.

  18. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Coryza (koh RYE zah) A nonconstructed term of Greek origin, it is the common cold accompanied by a runny nose. It is caused by a virus infecting the upper respiratory tract, and may also be called rhinitis.

  19. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Croup (kroop) A viral infectious disease obstructing the larynx and producing a coarse, barking cough in infants and young children. Croup involves a narrowing of the upper trachea.. the ‘steeple sign’ Pertussis (per TUSS siss) A similar infection affecting the larynx, trachea, and bronchi is found in all ages, and is commonly called whooping cough. The larynx spasms at the end of the cough, producing a characteristic noise.

  20. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Emphysema (em fih SEE mah) The alveolar walls deteriorate and lose elasticity, often the result of smoking. Symptoms of this chronic lung disease include coughing, the formation of a barrel chest due to labored breathing, and hypoxemia.

  21. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Pleuritis (ploo RYE tiss) Inflammation of the pleural membranes, also called pleurisy.

  22. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Pneumonia (noo MOH nee ah) Inflammation of the soft lung tissue that results in the formation of fluid within the alveoli. This interferes with the exchange of gases.

  23. Diseases and disorders of the respiratory system… Pneumothorax (Noo moh THOH raks) The abnormal presence of air or gas within the pleural cavity. It can be caused by a penetrating injury to the chest or severe coughing, and may lead to the collapse of the alveoli in the lungs.

  24. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Aspiration (ass pih RAY shun) Using suction to remove fluid, air, or foreign bodies. Aspiration of bone marrow Aspirating fluid from a joint Aspirating saliva and blood during dental procedures

  25. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Nebulizer (NEBB yoo lye zer) A nonconstructed word derived from the Latin word for ‘fog’. This is a device used to convert a liquid medication to a mist that can be inhaled into the lungs by deep breathing.

  26. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Oximetry (ok SIM eh tree) A procedure that measures oxygen levels in the blood. It uses a instrument called an oximeter (ok SIM eh ter). A pulse oximeter provides this information via noninvasive contact with a finger.

  27. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Rhinoplasty (RYE noh plass tee) Surgical repair of the nose, often performed during cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the nose. Septoplasty (SEP toh plass tee) is surgery to repair a deviation of the nasal septum to improve breathing.

  28. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Thoracentesis (THOR ah sehn TEE siss) Also called a pleurocentesis, it is the surgical puncture into the thoracic cavity using a needle and syringe. It is done to aspirate fluid for diagnosis or treatment.

  29. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Thoracotomy (THOR ah KOTT oh mee) Part of the thoracostomy procedure, this is a surgical incision into the chest wall. Creating this opening allows for the insertion of a drainage or air tube.

  30. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Tracheotomy (TRAY kee OTT oh mee) Part of the tracheostomy procedure, it is an incision made into the trachea, so a breathing tube can be inserted. #4 Incision site for tracheotomy Tracheostomy: insertion of breathing tube

  31. Treatments and Procedures for the respiratory system… Ventilator A device that provides breathing assistance by pushing air into the patient’s airway. It offers relief to patients in respiratory distress, and may be used by emergency medical technicians for patients in transit to a hospital.

  32. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… ABG Arterial Blood Gases A clinical test to identify the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood.

  33. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… COPD Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease A general term for pulmonary diseases that obstruct the flow of air to and from the lungs. Includes chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, etc.

  34. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… CF Cystic Fibrosis A hereditary disease, usually fatal before the age of 30. There is excess mucous production in the respiratory tract, which thickens and blocks air flow.

  35. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… RDS Respiratory Distress Syndrome A respiratory disease characterized by atelectasis (at eh LEK tah siss), or the collapse of the alveoli in the lungs. There are both newborn and adult forms of the disease.

  36. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… PE Pulmonary Embolism A blood clot that blocks pulmonary circulation. It may a complication of an injury or surgery elsewhere in the body.

  37. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… SARS Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome A severe, rapid-onset viral infection that causes lung inflammation, alveolar damage, and lung collapse. It may be caused the the influenza virus, and may be fatal.

  38. Abbreviations associated with the respiratory system… TB Tuberculosis An infection of the lungs caused by a specific bacteria. This bacteria forms a swelling within the soft tissue of the lung, and then hardens into a barrier that prevents white blood cells from entering and destroying the bacteria.
