Efficient Installation and Degreasing Process for SPS Magnets with Safety Measures

DESCRIPTION

This document outlines the procedure for degreasing SPS magnets, focusing on essential steps, safety requirements, and equipment needed. Key processes include initial contamination control, degreasing by circulation using detergent, rinsing, and drying. A detailed list of equipment such as tanks, pumps, and handling procedures is provided. Emphasis is placed on cleanliness and safety, ensuring proper ventilation and the availability of demineralized water and proper waste management. The cleaning procedure aims to maintain optimal performance and safety standards in electrochemistry and surface finishing.

  1. Installation to degrease the SPS magnets chambers Leonel Ferreira

  2. Principle Surface required Services Safety

  3. SPS_U Degreasing, principle • Main steps • Initial contamination control (to be defined, possibly just visual inspection) • Acetone impregnated rag cleaning (if necessary) - ~ 5 minutes per magnet; • Degreasing by circulation (detergent) – 2 hours; • Drain of the circuit after each cycle – 10 minutes per magnet; • Rinsing (clean water) to container (RP control) – 30 minutes; • Drying with blower – up to 2 hours. • Control of cleanliness (to be defined, possibly statistical sampling and FTIR analysis) Electrochemistry & surface finishing

  4. SPS_U Degreasing, principle • Main equipment • Four tanks for detergent and water (volume to be defined: ~ 1.5 m3/each) equipped with heaters and filtering pumps; • Peristaltic pump ( minimum 5 m3/h + option to invert pumping direction) • Blower • Piping (hoses + valves + quick connectors) • Transportable containers (0.8 m3) Electrochemistry & surface finishing

  5. SPS_U Degreasing, principle Identical principle: Cleaning machine for LHC magnets Electrochemistry & surface finishing NB: all can be done without building a machine on purpose, but implies more manual operations

  6. SPS_U Degreasing, surface required • Cleaning installation : 6 m x 3 m • Rag cleaning procedure : 8 m x 1m Lay-outexample Rag cleaning procedure Magnets Cleaninginstallation Electrochemistry & surface finishing

  7. SPS_U Degreasing, services Demineralised water (1 MOhm.cm) – 2 to 4 m3/cleaning cycle Clean, dry compressed air or nitrogen Power supply 220 and 380 V (16 and 32 A) Ventilation Electrochemistry & surface finishing

  8. SPS_U Degreasing, Safety A retention basin for the cleaning installation, the magnets being cleaned plus containers with waste water from the rinsing step must be foreseen; A safety shower must be installed in the working area (a portable one is enough) and a disposable eye washer; The working area must be well delimited and the chemical risks easily identified; Detergent, filters, rags and water for elimination must be controlled by RP .
