Advancing Manufacturing Education in Wisconsin: The RPOS Initiative

The Wisconsin manufacturing sector benefits significantly from rigorous programs of study (RPOS), funded by a $258,400 annual grant. This initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of Education, enhances partnerships with local high schools and Northcentral Technical College, focusing on technical skills, industry requirements, and career pathways. By embedding ten essential components into the curriculum, the program prepares students for diverse career opportunities while addressing the state's economic needs. With six states awarded RPOS grants, Wisconsin stands to strengthen its critical manufacturing workforce.

  2. HOW DID WISCONSIN GET INVOVLED? U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education sent a RFP announcement. • Great opportunity to expand Wisconsin’s work in the area of programs of study • Announcement of the award was in October, 2010 • $258,400/year up to a maximum of four years

  3. WHY MANUFACTURING • Wisconsin is home to over 9,000 manufactures • Manufacturing accounts for $47 billion to our state’s economy • The manufacturing industry ranks #2 in Wisconsin gross state product • The manufacturing industry employs 448,000 workers • Six states in total were awarded RPOS grants Arizona – Education Kansas – STEM Maryland – Automotive Montana – Construction Utah – Health Science Wisconsin - Manufacturing

  4. WHO IS INVOLVED • The Northcentral Technical College area and four area local high schools • Wausau West • Wausau East • D.C. Everest • Spencer

  5. WHAT IS A RPOS? • Focuses on the ten components • The ten components are currently embedded into the five areas of our current Carl Perkins application

Spencer High School • Framework element year 2 action steps: • Partnerships with Industry • to develop and communicate industry skill requirements • Teaching and learning • Develop learning communities between core academic and career & technical education • Technical Skills Assessment • Streamline manufacturing TSA document for classroom

Spencer High School Enhancement of RPOS elements • Partnerships: • -NTC - Transcripted-credit-and additional partnerships • Local Manufacturing Businesses • Guidance Counseling and Academic Advisement: • CTE team leader-pathway development • Career counseling 8th and 10th grades with parental involvement through WISCAREERS website • Grant money uses: • Local core and CTE collaboration, tours, curriculum development, consortium in-service of CTE and core

  9. EVALUATION • We will be using data to evaluate the effectivness of our work. The evaluation will using RPOS concentrators versus non-RPOS concentrators.

ENGINEERING A BETTER FUTURE IN WISCONSIN • HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY TAKE A CHOICE OF UP TO 79 CAREER PATHWAYS. • TRANSCRIPTED CREDIT STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES IN WELDING • AAS – MECHANICAL DESIGN – NTC • BS – ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY – UW-STOUT • 100% FULL TRANSFER OF NTC STUDENT CREDITS INTO UW-STOUT’S PROGRAM. • CURRENTLY EXPLORING MULTI-TRACK CLASS OPPORTUNITIES TO ALIGN INTO RPOS.
