  1. Collaboration in Electoral Services Dr. Dave Smith Chief Executive, Sunderland City Council Chair, Solace Elections & Democracy Network Board

  2. Challenges faced • Increased volume of elections • Diversification of electoral methods • Establishment of IER • Voter registration and turnout • Decreasing resources

  3. Consequences • Increased demand • Changing practices • Turnover in staff • Impact on quality, security and reliability?

  4. Collaborative nature of our work • Continued effective working with the Cabinet Office and the Electoral Commission • Continue to engage and respond to consultation – both formal and informal • Engage more cogently and coherently on policy • Working effectively within the regulatory framework

  5. Collaborative nature of our work • Continued collaboration between electoral officers and the AEA • Current networks crucial for ideas and the sharing of good practice • Smaller resources should not be under estimated

  6. Collaborative nature of our work • Cross-boundary work between ROs and EROs • Some areas already work in collaboration including sharing services • Preparations for IER providing important opportunities to develop capability to support each other • Need to work much more closely within our own internal organisations

  7. Future ways of working • Excellent examples of collaborative working already in place • SOLACE Elections and Democracy Network Board pursuing this work • Encourage and develop sharing experiences between local authorities   • Ensure everybody has the same opportunity to be able to perform at the highest level
