  1. Depression Is NOT A Choice, And NOT Your Fault

  2. For anyone who does not understand depression, it can be all too easy to imagine that you should be able to simply ‘pick yourself up’ by making certain changes to your life. If you are depressed, a friend or family member may have suggested that you ‘get out more’, or ‘think positively’. While such comments are intended to be well-meaning, they can be incredibly harmful to you in that they promote a sense of shame about your feelings and state of mind. If you are depressed, it is imperative you understand that it absolutely is not your fault, and that it is not something you can simply ‘snap out of’. It is unknown what exactly causes depression, but various reasons given by experts are as follows:

  3. major life changes (divorce, death of a loved one, loss of a job) • trauma • abuse • certain medications • conflict • genes (family history of depression) The bottom line is that depression is a complex illness with many factors that contribute to a range of symptoms that may include feelings of low self-worth, negative thoughts, and thoughts of self-harm and/or suicide.

  4. Is there anything you can do to help yourself if you are depressed? Seeking professional help is always recommended if you have been diagnosed with depression (and indeed, if you have not been diagnosed but are struggling with feelings of low self-worth and/or despair consider getting a consultation soon). In many cases, professional help may be the best option, and your medical doctor may recommend a combination of medication and psychotherapy to help you.

  5. How do you know when to seek outside help? If you have been feeling depressed continually for more than two weeks, it is likely that you will need to seek some professional help. If you are not sure whether you might be depressed, you can check out the list of common symptoms below: • Changes to your weight or your appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Feeling tired and unenergetic most of the time • Intense feelings of guilt or worthlessness • Poor concentration • Suicidal thoughts

  6. Depression is certainly not your fault. Seek professional help as soon as possible and begin feeling better now. Consult with your medical doctor or schedule a series of sessions with us.
