The Gothic Period • The Gothic style began with the architecture of the 12th century • Europe was putting the memory of the ``Dark Ages'' behind it and moving into a radiant new era of prosperity and confidence. • The most noticeable feature of the art of the Gothic period is its increased naturalism

  3. Jan Van Eyck • Lived from the year 1395 to 1441 • Flemish painter who perfected the newly developed technique of oil painting • Painted mostly portraits and religious subjects

  4. The Ghent altarpiece • Painted in 1432 • Oil on panel • Located in the Cathedral of St Bavo, Ghent, Belgium
