  3. Purpose • To describethe necessity of locational affinity awareness for the various BAN applications Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  4. Locational Affinity Awareness • Recognize the degree of affinity between two nodes in the locational point of view • according to the measured parameters related of the physical proximity such as distance, touch, direction, etc • It may take time in measuring these parameters to get a certain recognition level Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  5. Locational Affinity Awareness • Function • A kind of context awareness • Automatic connection setup • User select an appropriate recommended connection • Objectives • To lighten loads for connecting proximate BAN devices manually • Locational affinity to help context-aware services Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  6. Applicable Cases • Medical • Patient monitoring or examination [1] • Non-medical • E-charm [2] (personal item tracking) • Smart key • Game application • Social networking service Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  7. Technical Components • Connection setup • Parameter measurement • Encounter related • Distance • Direction • Privacy and Security (E.G.) Locational Affinity = f (distance, direction, encounter) Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  8. Connection Setup Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  9. Connection Setup • Features • When two nodes encounter in the body-around range, the connection to exchange the temporary data should be established by the unconscious way • Methods • Neighbor node discovery • Fast hand-shaking Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  10. Measurement Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  11. Encounter related parameter • The ratio of encounter • The pattern of encounter • The type of encounter • Normal • Touch Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  12. Touch Awareness • Features • To recognize the close intimacy • the type of encounter (Normal, Touch) • Very powerful function for easy and intuitive connection setup of BAN devices • BAN system can distinguish the on/in-body node from the around-body node • Method • Human body communication Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  13. Distance Awareness • Features • The distance between two nodes is measured • The degree of affinity can be inferred from the measured distance • Method • Fine ranging technique Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  14. Direction Awareness • Features • Recognize whether the conversation is in the face-to-face condition or not • Methods • RF technology • Geo-magnetic sensor • Vision/image processing • Others? Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  15. Privacy and Security Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  16. Privacy and Security • Automatic connection setup for the locational affinity awareness is not secure • Authentication should be done for some use-cases • An application considering user privacy • a group-aware application • making a random encounter into authenticated one • Identification may be inevitable to get higher security Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung

  17. Conclusion • Locational affinity awareness is required for some BAN applications • Required Techniques • Neighbor node discovery & hand-shaking • Ranging • Human body communication • Authentication or identification Seung-Hoon Park, Samsung
