HIV AND AIDS PROFILE HIV prevalence among high-risk groups • Apart from male vendors with 7% HIV prevalence rate, the rest of the high risk groups have much higher prevalence rates than the national average of 12% • Female sex workers have the highest prevalence rate at 69% followed by the Police at 32% (females and 25% males)

  5. To-date about 3 million Malawians gone for HTC & know their HIV status against about 7 million who are sexually active • Cumulatively, a total of 184, 000 patients ever started on ART against an estimated 280, 000 people who are supposed to be on ART

  6. FACTORS FACILITATING SPREAD OF HIV • Multiple and concurrent partnerships • Intergenerational sex especially among girls and older men • Low risk perception especially among youth • Socio-economic imbalances (poverty) • Gender inequalities • Inconsistent and incorrect condom use • Harmful cultural practices
