Enforcing Rules Sanctions- rewards & punishment to encourage conformity to norms Formal Sanctions: given only by officials such as judge Positive: medal of honor for soldier Negative: jail time Informal Sanctions: given by anyone in society Positive: saying thank you Negative: staring at someone who talks
