  1. Literary Analysis A friendly review for what I’m sure you already know….

  2. Ask relevant questions like: • Why did the author write this? • What is the theme? • What are some symbols? • How are the characters developed? • How is the style relevant to the content? • What do the characters learn? • Which rhetorical devices are addressed and why? Begin with the basics

  3. How are the characters connected to the themes? • How are the themes, characters, and symbols connected? • What does the format and style suggest about the story? • What are my connections to the story? Look for connections and patterns

  4. Thesis statements are not questions. • Thesis statements are not mere observations. • Thesis statements function in two ways: • They introduce the main idea that will be developed in the text of the essay. • They analyze or illuminate the text, often in terms of literary elements. Develop a thesis statement. Hint: ALWAYS connect to a theme!

  5. Observation: Toni Morrison’s novel, Beloved , uses a non-linear structure with frequent flashbacks.

  6. Helpful hint for developing thesis statements: • Use action verbs: • Toni Morrison mirrors the fragmentation of her characters’ lives in the structure of the novel itself. • NOT: Beloved , written by Toni Morrison, has a fragmented format that mirrors her characters.

  7. As a rule of thumb, try to find at least three direct quotations to support each component in the thesis statement. Locate quotations that support your thesis statement.

  8. Determine the order/organization for your essay: • Traditional outline. • Notes that only you can decipher. • Macaroni art.

  9. A guideline to follow is that your introduction should contain at least four significant sentences, including your thesis statement. INTRODUCTIONS

  10. Literature often portrays characters who have many conflicts. An insignificant sentence:

  11. Duh!

  12. They may introduce background. • They may introduce new concepts and/or definitions. • They may provide transitions. • They may introduce quotations. • They may provide facts and support. All sentences should have weight and meaning.

  13. Toni Morrison is a good author. • She writes about former slaves and women of color. • Slavery was shameful. • Beloved is a novel that deals with many issues relevant to literature. Empty sentences have no other purpose than to take up space.

  14. Let’s start with a general statement about writing, one that begins to deal with our topic directly yet hasn’t addressed the specific novel or the thesis statement. EXAMPLE:

Morrison mirrors the fragmentation of her characters’ lives through the novel’s non-linear structure, specifically through her use of flashback, stream of consciousness, and shifts in point of view.

  17. This is where you present your interpretation and the points you wish to make that are related to the prompt. (THEME!) Body Paragraph(s) • Usually, you’re reference to rhetorical devices/narrative techniques are the “HOW” an author conveys THEME, but you must also explain “WHY” an author uses these rhetorical devices/narrative techniques to convey THEME.

Use specific references and details from the passage • Don’t always paraphrase the original; refer directly to it (don’t forget to put quotation marks around it!) • Use “connective tissue” in your essay to establish adherence to the question • Try using “echo words” (i.e. synonyms, such as death/loss/passing or character/persona/personality)

  19. Do NOT summarize! You cannot argue plot points. Instead…discuss how PLOT ELEMENTS are used to convey theme OR how the DICTION, TONE, IMAGERY, MOTIF, STYLISTIC ELEMENT, POINT-OF-VIEW…etc. convey theme and WHY the author chose this method to convey the theme. • Topic Sentence: Beloved uses flashback to demonstrate that the past is always a part of the present. • Evidence of flashback. • Analysis of how flashback relates to your thesis statement (don’t forget about theme!).

  20. Be creative. Readers have already read your essay, you don't have to summarize it again. Revisit some points, but don't retell it. Concluding Paragraph

  21. Don't reinvent. Definitely don't bring up anything new. If you've found yourself doing this, probably make it a whole different paragraph. • Make a general point. If you can find some way to be novel, wise, or basically make yourself sound worldly, do so. Somehow relate all that you've written to the universe. Your conclusion should answer the question, “SO WHAT?” How does what I’ve discussed in the essay connect to mankind/readers in general/humanity?

Because of Morrison’s innovative use of basic literary elements like flashback, stream of consciousness, and point of view, she is able to produce a powerful effect that reflects the sometimes chaotic and often broken lives of her characters. By constructing the novel in what at first appears to be unrelated pieces unanchored in chronology or point of view, Morrison actually achieves a kind of unity that supports the development of the story and her characters. In doing so, Morrison creates a new kind of American novel, one not tied to a form rooted in tradition. Similarly, her characters forge ahead to create new lives, confidently rejecting the history of oppression from which it had once seemed impossible to escape. Example
