  2. INDIA - Mineral Resources • 89 minerals out of which 4 are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals • 80% of mining is in coal and the balance 20% is in various metals and other raw materials such as gold, copper, iron, lead, bauxite, zinc and uranium

  3. Orissa – A Mineral Rich State • Iron-Ore 33% • Bauxite 60% • Chromite 98% • Coal 25% • Manganese 67% ( of Country’s Reserve)

  4. Surprising Facts • More than 9 mn tribals displaced in the country. • Between 1951-1995,1.5 mn people displaced in Orissa due to various so called Projects!! • Poor Infrastructure – Trucks plying @ 10kmph • State Emitting 1% of World’s GHGs–2006 & 5% by 2008

Hoda Committee Recommendations • Simplifying and Streamlining the existing procedures for granting permits and leases for mining. • Recommend Amendments to Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation (MMDR) Act, 1957 • to make Value Addition within State a condition for grant of mineral concession • Recommendation for introduction of Large Area Prospecting License (LAPL) that proposes a max area of 5,000 sq km
