2012 Elections“The Year of the Woman” • Congress that starts in January 2013 will include record number of women • 20 senators, 81 representatives • N.H. will be the first state to send an all-female member to Congress • Tammy Baldwin made history -- twice. • She became the first openly gay politician, and first Wisconsin woman, elected to the U.S. Senate. • A woman was elected to the South Carolina senate • Currently the only all-male state legislature • Research shows that female lawmakers significantly reshape policy only when they have true parity with men • While 2012’s gains are noteworthy, there’s still a long way to go
