What’s the Matter? • Matter – is anything that has mass or volume. • Mass - is the amount of matter that an object has. • Volume – is the amount of space that an object fills. • What in this classroom is matter and volume? • Ultimately, matter is the material that makes up the whole universe. Just think about that, we measure EVERYTHING in chemistry.
What’s the Matter? • Pure Substance – is matter that contains only one type of particle. Ex Copper Wire - it is made from copper particles only. Aluminum Foil – it is made from aluminum only • Mixtures – contains two or more pure substances. Ex Copper II Chloride (CuCl2) mixed with Water (H2O)
Pure Substance’s • A pure substance can be either an element from the periodic table or compounds of elements. • Elements – is a pure substancethat cannot be changed into anything simpler. The periodic table has about 116 pure substances.
Pure Substances • Compound – is a pure substance that consist of two or more elements from the periodic table. There are hundreds and hundreds of compounds that we can make. • CuCl2 (Copper Chloride), NaCl2 (Sodium Chloride AKA Table Salt), H2O (Dihydrogen Oxide AKA Water), Cu2SO4 (Copper Sulfate) NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide) and the list can go on.
Mixtures • Mixtures – are when two or more pure substances are put together, but their particles are not chemically joined. • Heterogeneous mixture – is a mixture that is not uniform in its composition. Oil and water are heterogeneous
Mixtures • Homogeneous mixtures – are made of substances that are evenly and microscopically mixed together. • Pop is a mixture of sugar, corn syrup, and carbon dioxide gas in water. All of it is evenly mixed so as to have the appearance of one substance. • Copper II Chloride mixed with water is an example of this as well.
