SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science Tennessee SPI Objective: Recognize that all matter consists of atoms. Essential Learning Students will examine the basic structure of atoms and will learn to distinguish between things that are comprised of atoms and those that are not. Essential Question(s) What is the basic structure of atoms, and how can we distinguish between things made of atoms and things that are not?

  2. SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science Tennessee SPI Objective: Recognize that all matter consists of atoms. • All matter is made up of atoms • Matter is anything that has mass & takes up space (volume) • Matter is anything that is solid, liquid, gas, or plasma These objects are made of matter. Therefore they are made of atoms. The Sun (plasma) Orange Juice (liquid) Rock (solid) Oxygen (gas)

  3. SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science Tennessee SPI Objective: Recognize that all matter consists of atoms. What do these 3 items have in common? • They all have mass and take up space (volume) • They are either solid, liquid, or gas • So they are all made of matter which is made of atoms Insect Flower Rock

  4. Things that are not made of matter Ask yourself if it is a solid, liquid, or gas Example: Time is not made of atoms • Time is not a solid: You can not touch it • Time is not a liquid: You can not drink it. • Time is not a gas: You can not smell it. Time Example: Energy is not made of atoms • Energy is not a solid • Energy is not a liquid • Energy is not a gas Solar Radiation Example: Force is not made of atoms • Force is not a solid • Force is not a liquid • Force is not a gas Magnetic Force

  5. SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science • We once thought atoms were the smallest particles. • We now know there are even smaller particles • They are called sub-atomic particles • Below is a model of a beryllium atom • It has 4 (blue) protons (So the atomic number is four) • It also has 5 (green) neutrons and 4 (orange) electrons 4 Legend Be =protons =neutrons =electrons Beryllium 9.0

  6. SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science Atoms are made of three sub-atomic particles… …3 protons (the blue circles) (atomic number is 3) …4 neutrons (the green circles) …3 electrons (the orange circles) 3 Li Lithium 6.9 Here is a model of a lithium atom

  7. SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science Protons: positive charge, found in the nucleus of atoms Note: In atoms the number of protons & electrons are the same Neutrons: no charge, also found in the nucleus of atoms Legend Nucleus =protons =neutrons =electrons

  8. SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Notes Science • Electrons are located in the electron cloud in areas called electron shells • This atom has 2 electron shells. (see cloud in green area below) These can also be called electron energy levels or electron orbitals. The green area is the electron cloud area Legend 1st Shell =protons Nucleus Nucleus =neutrons 2nd Shell =electrons
